People living in developed nations have gained an infamous reputation for arrogance. If the stereotype rings true at all, it may stem from a sense of relative immortality. In a world where one can make a phone call through a car without more than a touch of a button, it only follows logically any malady conceivable has a treatment available.
Of course, the suggestion of some panacea for every disease imaginable stands as overtly ludicrous, but pharmaceuticals do exist for a great many ailments. For the gift of modern pharmaceuticals, the general public has several pharmaceutical companies to thank. The populace has had mixed reactions with said companies in the past, but their ultimate goals have largely remained the betterment of the world.
One of the most well-known companies, Pfizer may have gained much of its notoriety more for its clients than its pharmaceuticals. Famous for the "little blue pill," Pfizer certainly manufactures a host of pharmaceuticals treating things far more critical than erectile dysfunction. Breakthroughs in cancer research led to a new drug to stop cell reproduction and cut off the nutritional supply to tumors. Separate research has developed new drugs to help a habitual smoker finally find a means of quitting.
Johnson and Johnson, too, has developed a reputation for more than its prescription pharmaceuticals. Many associate the company with the popular baby oil and baby shampoo offerings, the standard for infant wellness. Johnson and Johnson takes great pride in fostering parent-child relationships, but its pharmaceuticals also target a variety of conditions. Current pharmaceuticals progressing along the development line include treatments for ADHD, schizophrenia, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, chronic pain, chronic kidney disease and many other maladies.
Merck and Co has maintained a steady presence in pharmaceuticals for over a hundred years. It began in 1891 as simply an arm of a German company, but following the first World War, the US confiscated the company and made it independent. Now, nearly a century later, Merck and Co stands as one of the top seven pharmaceuticals companies in the nation, working on drugs to treat osteoporosis and Type 2 diabetes, as well as a vaccine to prevent cervical cancer.
Abbott Laboratories, as with the other companies, has a long history of manufacturing pharmaceuticals to enhance human health. Through the years, it has created such staples as organic Similac and Ensure, both widely known and trusted over-the-counter products. Abbott Laboratories have also developed treatments for ailments ranging from AIDS and rheumatoid arthritis, new delivery systems for existing drugs to make administering the drugs easier, and helped research move along by creating compounds specifically for them.
Considering the abundance of groups working toward wellness for the world through pharmaceuticals, it may be no small wonder certain people may have an inflated sense of their invulnerability. Sure, new diseases spring forth every day, but thanks for pharmaceutical companies, humanity stands a fighting chance at developing the cure, too. If that means occasionally developing little blue pills along the way, then so be it, for as long as innovation continues, that sense of invulnerability might not be as inflated as some may think.
